Faux Finishes
A Word From The Artist

Faux Finish - part of mantelFine faux finish is an art form that's truly mastered by few people. Mary Adore Coloney is a skilled master not only of specialty finishes such as sponging, ragging, and the more common forms of marbling, but also of exquisite finishes seldom seen because of their difficulty. She faultlessly renders faux marbre such as malachite, lapis lazuli, porphyry, and travertine. In modern construction she's called on to render steel and fiberglass doors in faux bois to match mahogany, cherry, oak, and cypress. Ms. Coloney renders bamboo and tortoiseshell; she transforms concrete into metal, stone, or terra cotta. Using a proprietary technique that is water and weatherproof, she renders marble on concrete statuary, flooring, planting vessels, and ponds. She can extract elements from your wallpaper or fabrics and incorporate them as matching decorative details. She can turn trunks and chests into decorative "antiques". Ms. Coloney reproduces artistic elements in the style of classical artists. She excels at trompe l'oeil, rendering niches and statuary as well as architectural elements. She also specializes in creative problem solving, from damaged architectural elements and repair of painted surfaces to innovative design solutions.

"Good faux finish can transform a room. It can also put the finishing touch on a mural. One of my favorite memories is of a restaurant mural that included a trompe l'oeil door complete with real doorknob. Shortly after the mural was finished a patron pulled the doorknob out of the wall, trying to open the door. It was hard on the wall, but I was really flattered!"
